Description
Extended versions of Peter Jackson's complete epic big screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy - filmed back-to-back and released over 3 consecutive years.

In 'The Fellowship of the Rings' (2001) Frodo (Elijah Wood) is a hobbit living in the Shire, a quiet, peaceful part of Middle Earth. When it turns out that his elderly relative Bilbo (Ian Holm) is harbouring the ultimate Ring of Power and the evil Nazgul riders of Sauron are coming to find it, Frodo is entrusted by wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to deliver the Ring out of the Shire without it falling into their hands. Frodo leaves the Shire aided by his cousins Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd) and trusty friend Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), but they soon realise that the agents of Mordor are everywhere and that their trip is far from over. Once they reach the Elvish realm of Rivendell the Hobbits form part of the anti-Sauron fellowship, which includes Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Boromir (Sean Bean), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom), Gimli the dwarf and of course Gandalf. Together they must battle across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom, the fiery chasm in the centre of Mordor.

In 'The Two Towers' (2002) the Fellowship of the Ring has now divided and Sam and Frodo are lost in the hills of Emyn Muil. They are also being followed by Gollum, a creature who promises to help them find the Mountain of Doom. Meanwhile Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for the hobbits Merry and Pippin in the Kingdom of Rohan, which is currently being attacked by Saruman's orc armies. Gandalf returns as Gandalf the White to remind Aragorn of his destiny to unite the people of Rohan with Gondor. Whilst the Fellowship are not travelling together they must unite against the powerful forces coming from the Two Towers: Orthanc Tower in Isengard where Saruman has bred a deadly army of 10,000, and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dûr.

Finally, 'The Return of the King' (2003) won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Gandalf manages to rally Gondor's fallen army with the help of King Theoden of Rohan for the biggest battle in the history of Middle-earth; and Aragorn finally faces up to his responsibilities. They are obviously out-numbered but are determined to keep Sauron distracted in order to enable Frodo to complete his quest to destroy the Ring by throwing it into the fires of the Mountain of Doom.

Description
Peter Jackson's epic trilogy is fully told here, with special extended version of all three LORD OF THE RINGS films included.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: With THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, director Peter Jackson has achieved a meticulous and captivating adaptation of the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy. The setting is Middle-earth, a mythological land populated by elves, dwarves, humans, and the gentle, diminutive hobbits upon whom the story centers. One hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), unexpectedly comes into possession of an ancient magical ring so powerful it invariably corrupts anyone who wears it. In order to prevent the ring's erstwhile owner, the dark lord Sauron, from reclaiming the ring and taking over Middle-earth, a motley band of comrades set out to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Included in the group are Frodo and hobbits Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monoghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd); the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen); human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean); the dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies); the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Along the way, they wage battle with monsters, demons, and Sauron's evil minions, all brought to life by spectacular digital technology.

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS: Picking up where the first film left off, Peter Jackson's THE TWO TOWERS throws the remaining members of the Fellowship into the scattered chaos of Middle-earth, now fully under siege by the forces of Sauron. While Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to the dreaded Mordor, Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are held captive by orcs, and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) search for their abducted companions. Soon Frodo and Sam are joined by the sulking and duplicitous Gollum (portrayed by the voice and motion-captured acting of Andy Serkis), who becomes their guide through the barren lands leading to Mount Doom. Meanwhile Merry and Pippin encounter the looming Treebeard (voiced by Rhys-Davies) and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli find themselves in the land of Rohan, accompanied by an old friend. As the tale continues, each scenario becomes more perilous, and fierce battles erupt at both Isengard, home of the treacherous Saruman (Christopher Lee), and the massive Helm's Deep.

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING: THE RETURN OF THE KING, the third and final film in Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, finds Middle-earth on the cusp of great change. Weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis), the two-faced former owner of the Ring that Frodo must destroy in the fires of Mount Doom. Meanwhile Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) contend with the deranged ruler Denethor (John Noble) at the once-mighty city of Minas Tirith, as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) joins Éowyn (Miranda Otto) and the Riders of Rohan to hold back the forces of Sauron. Amidst the chaos, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) must rise to his destiny, aided by Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in assembling allies for a massive battle that will decide the fate of Middle-earth.

If there was even a moment of hesitation before you choose "Add to chart" let me make it an easy choice for you: this is probably the best DVD Boxset you will ever buy. Even if you hate fantasy, Peter Jackson, Hobbit's or people with dirty feet, still buy this product if only for your grandchildren to enjoy the most memorable film of our time. And to top that off it is the EXTENDED versions of the films. That means it is EVEN BETTER that the already deserved 10 out of 10 mark! And at this INCREDIBLE price (in SA I bought mine for R700) you should already have stopped reading this and pressed "Add to chart". Don't buy food this month; buy this!

This is the definitive collection of the Lord of the Rings. Truly epic, both in duration (set over 12 discs, 6 of which contain the movie, with extra features including, storyboard art, panel discussions, director and cast commentary. Info in WEGA's special fx, this is an incredible boxset. It's beautifully pasckaged as well featuring the art of Alan Lee. The soundtrack is in DTS audio, which truly does justice to Howard Shore's beautiful compositions and the London Philharmonic vibrates with th eotherworldy power of Tolkien's world. A must in any DVD collection. This is the definitive fantasy film of all time.

I imported this box set all the way from the UK when it was released.

BUY IT!! For R481 it's a bargain!

The Set:
You get 12 DVD's in total. 4 per movie. 2 of the discs contain the actual film and the other 2 contain loads and loads of bonus material. The box is neat and will look impressive in your collection.

The Movies and soundtrack:
All 3 movies are extended. Roughly 30mins of extra footage each. Ever wondered what happened to the orcs in Two Towers?? Video quality is excellent and an added bonus is the DTS ES Discrete 6.1 soundtrack. No matrix decoding. 6 proper discrete audio channels plus a sub-woofer channel. Of course you will need a 6.1 DTS compatible receiver to appreciate the extra center rear channel.

The Bonus Material
I've watched all of the bonus discs and I can honestly say that I don't know of any other dvd movie release that can compare to the amount of bonus material on these discs. Everything is there. From conceptual art to costume design to visual effects. They also have some interesting bits on Tolkien.

Verdict:
Even if you are not a fan of fantasy films/books, you will appreciate the amount of work that went into creating these 3 movies. Just watch the bonus material and you will see. It's monumental!

And if you are a fan of the book but think the film is not true to the book, again, watch the bonus material and all will be revealed. Jackson and the writers are quite convincing in their explanation of why they changed certain things.

Fan or no fan, BUY IT!! BUY IT NOW!!
